  • Duplex Ultrasound Scan

A duplex ultrasound scan is a simple, painless, non-invasive method of looking at arteries and veins deep within the body.  The duplex scanner has the ability  to measure the size of the veins and arteries, and the flow of blood through them. The duplex ultrasound scanner consists of an ultrasound probe which emits short pulses of very high frequency sound, far higher than the ear can hear.  The probe is applied to the skin using a special water soluble gel that allows for good contact, and by angling the probe in different directions, structures beneath the skin can be identified and scanned. A duplex scan is a very useful tool in determining the absence or presence of both arterial and venous disease and may avoid the need for x-rays in many patients.

Duplex ultrasound scans are able to be done as outpatient tests.

  • Cerebrovascular Examinations
This examination utilizes duplex ultrasonography to evaluate the carotid arteries which are located in your neck, to determine if there is a narrowing or blockage present.

  • Venous Examinations
The venous examination utilizes duplex ultrasonography to evaluate the upper and lower extremity veins to determine the absence or presence of deep and/or superficial venous blood clots. Venous duplex examinations can also be used to determine venous insufficiency and varicose veins.

  • Peripheral Arterial Examinations
Pulse Volume Recording (PVR) and Segmental Pressures

Ultrasound and blood pressure cuffs are used to evaluate the arteries that provide the blood supply to the the arms or legs.  Blood pressure cuffs will be placed at different levels of your arms or legs.  This test will locate blockages within the arteries.

  • Arterial Duplex Imaging
This examination utilizes duplex scanning to both idnetify and/or follow-up blockages of the arms and legs, arterial bypass grafts, and following other procedures that help supply better blood flow to the arms or legs.   Dialysis access grafts may be assessed as well.

  • Abdominal Aortic Imaging
This examination utilizes duplex scanning to evaluate the abdominal aorta and iliac arteries to determine the absence or presence of blockages and/or aneurysmal dilatation.  If an aneurysm is suspected or known, duplex scanning will be helpful to confirm its presence and follow the size for enlargement.
